I would here like to object to the erroneous use of the phrase 'alternative energy'
amongst environmentalists.
There is nothing alternative about wind, solar, tide or wave power.
'Alternative' means 'available in place of something else' or 'to replace with'.
In electricity generation terms that means replacing the ability to generate 24/7 with something else that can generate 24/7.
The only fuels that are therefore truly alternative are gas, coal, oil, nuclear and possibly hydro.
Wind, solar, tide and wave are not alternatives because there is always a slack period that cannot be factored in to give continuity of output.
Let us rather refer to these non-24/7 power sources as 'supplementary' and we might begin to get a grasp of the situation.
They have their uses but not in main stream electricity generation. |

20th January 2011. I really don't need to say anything about the following reports. Just go to the web pages indicated and see
for yourself that Peter Odell (in his report below) was telling the simple truth i.e.
THERE IS NO SHORTAGE OF ENERGY. Why do we not hear
about this on the BBC?
